The facts of his life, known from surviving documents, are sparse. He was one of eight children born to John Shakespeare, a merchant of some standing in his community. William probably went to the King's New School in Stratford, but he had no university education. In November 1582, at the age of eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior, who was pregnant with their first child, Susanna. She was born on May 26, 1583. Twins, a boy, Hamnet ( who would die at age eleven), and a girl, Judith, were born in 1585. By 1592 Shakespeare had gone to London working as an actor and already known as a playwright. A rival dramatist, Robert Greene, referred to him as "an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers." Shakespeare became a principal shareholder and playwright of the successful acting troupe, the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later under James I, called the King' s Men). In 1599 the Lord Chamberlain's Men built and occupied the Globe Theater in Southwark near the Thames River. Here many of Shakespeare's plays were performed by the most famous actors of his time, including Richard Burbage, Will Kempe, and Robert Armin. In addition to his 37 plays, Shakespeare had a hand in others, including Sir Thomas More and The Two Noble Kinsmen, and he wrote poems, including Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. His 154 sonnets were published, probably without his authorization, in 1609. In 1611 or 1612 he gave up his lodgings in London and devoted more and more time to retirement in Stratford, though he continued writing such plays as The Tempest and Henry VII until about 1613. He died on April 23 1616, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford. No collected edition of his plays was published during his life-time, but in 1623 two members of his acting company, John Heminges and Henry Condell, put together the great collection now called the First Folio.

Number of Pages: 144

Dimensions: 0.4 x 7.5 x 5 IN

Publication Date: June 13, 2017

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: William Shakespeare's as You Like It

Interest Level: Middle Grades, 4-8

Reading Level: 4.3

Point Value: 1

Report copyright infringement

by Oscar Wilde (Author), Sylvan Barnet (Introduction by), Elise Bruhl (Afterword by)

A universal favorite, The Importance of Being Earnest displays Oscar Wilde's wit and theatrical genius at their brilliant best.

Subtitled "A Trivial Comedy for Serious People," this hilarious attack on Victorian manners and morals turns a pompous world on its head, lets duplicity lead to happiness, and makes riposte the highest form of art. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree, inhabiting a drama spun of their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett's language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existential post-World War II Europe. In 1928, he visited Paris for the first time and fell in with a number of avant-garde writers and artists, including James Joyce. In 1937, he settled in Paris permanently. Beckett wrote in both English and French, though his best-known works are mostly in the latter language. A prolific writer of novels, short stories, and poetry, he is remembered principally for his works for the theater, which belong to the tradition of the Theater of the Absurd and are characterized by their minimalist approach, stripping drama to its barest elements. In 1969, Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and commended for having "transformed the destitution of man into his exaltation." Beckett died in Paris in 1989.

At the age of seventy-six he said: "With diminished concentration, loss of memory, obscured intelligence... the more chance there is for saying something closest to what one really is. Diane Rayor's accurate yet accessible translation reflects the play's inherent theatricality. She provides an analytical introduction and comprehensive notes, and the edition includes an essay by director Karen Libman. Antigone begins after Oedipus and Jocasta's sons have killed each other in a battle over the kingship. The new king, Kreon, decrees that the brother who attacked with a foreign army remain unburied and promises death to anyone who defies him. The play centers on Antigone's refusal to obey Kreon's law and Kreon's refusal to allow her brother's burial. Each acts on principle colored by gender, personality, and family history. Antigone poses a conflict between passionate characters whose extreme stances leave no room for compromise. The highly charged struggle between the individual and the state has powerful implications for ethical and political situations today.

Number of Pages: 126

Dimensions: 0.7 x 8.6 x 5.7 IN

Publication Date: April 18, 2011

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Antigone

Interest Level: Upper Grades, 9-12

Reading Level: 5.2

Point Value: 2

Report copyright infringement

by Henrik Ibsen (Author), Edmund Gosse (Editor), William Archer (Translator)

""A Doll's House"" is a play written by Henrik Ibsen in 1890. Nora's life is turned upside down when her husband, Torvald, discovers her secret and reacts in a way that shatters her illusions of their perfect life together. In this highly-acclaimed translation of the greatest of all Greek tragedies, Stephen Berg--the well-known poet--and Diskin Clay--the distinguished classicist--combine their talents to offer the contemporary reader a dazzling version of Sophocles' timeless work. Emphasizing the intensity of the spoken language, they capture the unrelenting power of Sophoclean drama.

No other English translation conveys the same terrifying emotional level, especially in the choral odes, the forceful descriptions of Jokasta's death, the blinding of Oedipus, and the final scene of desolation. Berg and Clay's translation--now available for the first time in paperback--both adheres strictly to the original meaning of the play and breathes new life into its language.
Author Biography

Stephen Berg is a founder and co-editor of the American Poetry Review and the author of several volumes of poetry, including The Daughters, Grief, Akmatova at the Black Gates, and In It.
Diskin Clay, Professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University, is the author of numerous articles, translations, and reviews in classical journals.

Number of Pages: 114

Dimensions: 0.27 x 8.03 x 5.34 IN

Publication Date: March 31, 1988

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Oedipus the King

Interest Level: Upper Grades, 9-12

Reading Level: 5.6

Point Value: 2

Report copyright infringement

by Sophocles (Author), Nicholas Rudall (Translator)

The tragedy of Oedipus, who unknowingly slays his father and marries his mother, is one of the mythical cornerstones of Western civilization. The Winter's Tale is also notable for being one of Shakespeare's most complex psychological dramas and it is still one of his most widely performed plays. William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon, is known for his many sonnets and plays that have stood the test of time. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. He married at a young age and had three children. At age 21, Shakespeare began to have success in his business venture, an acting company known as the King's Men. He also began writing at this time and would ultimately complete many of the most famous works in all of literature. Shakespeare's plays were well-loved from the beginning and even today his popularity remains unparalleled. The cause of Shakespeare's death is unknown, but he is honored today in Westminster Abbey in the Poet's Corner.

Number of Pages: 128

Dimensions: 0.27 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: April 25, 2017

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: William Shakespeare's the Winter's Tale

Interest Level: Middle Grades, 4-8

Reading Level: 4.1

Point Value: 0.5

Macbeth: No Fear Shakespeare Deluxe Student Editions - Shakespeare Side-By-Side Plain English - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by William Shakespeare (Author), Sparknotes (Author)

Shakespeare everyone can understand--now in this new EXPANDED edition of MACBETH!

Why fear Shakespeare? The secret marriage of Cymbeline's daughter, Imogen, triggers much of the action, which includes villainous slander, homicidal jealousy, cross-gender disguise, a deathlike trance, and the appearance of Jupiter in a vision.

Kidnapped in infancy, Cymbeline's two sons are raised in a Welsh cave. As young men, they rescue a starving stranger (Imogen in disguise); kill Cymbeline's stepson; and fight with almost superhuman valor against the Roman army. The king, meanwhile, takes on a Roman invasion rather than pay a tribute. He too is a familiar figure--a father who loses his children and miraculously finds them years later; a king who defeats an army and grants pardon to all.

Cymbeline displays unusually powerful emotions with a tremendous charge. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children--an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare's only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare's working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

Barbara A. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) and his sister Mary Lamb (1764-1874) have taken twenty of Shakespeare's best plays and retold them in a more modern style--in digestible prose--aimed at sophisticated teenagers. All character dialogue, however, comes straight from the plays. A great way to become familiar with these masterpieces of literature before tackling the original versions. Highly recommended for everyone who wants a better understanding of Shakespeare's great works in a readable modern format. * * * * If you aren't familiar enough with Shakespearean old English to follow along without getting lost, or if you're taking your kids to see one of his plays, this book is invaluable. A very great way to introduce kids to Shakespeare, and to a love for classic literature. * * * * Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the most famous illustrators of his day and this book showcases twelve full-page, full color paintings, two full-page black-and-white illustrations, and seventeen smaller chapter-head and chapter-ending drawings that demonstrate his clear and gorgeous style. * * * * Includes the plays: The Tempest (Comedy); Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother--his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love.
Author Biography

Trevor Noah is a comedian from South Africa.

Number of Pages: 336

Dimensions: 0.7 x 8.2 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: February 12, 2019

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood

Interest Level: Upper Grades, 9-12

Reading Level: 5.4

Point Value: 13

Report copyright infringement

by Terry Barber (Author)

Walt Disney is specifically written to meet the needs of adolescents and adults who are reluctant readers.
